Dungannon Swifts briefly hit the summit of the Northern Ireland Premiership after a 2-0 away win over Limavady United on Saturday evening. The victory was their fourth in a row and featured another shutout, a defensive turnaround that has become the story of their early season.
Rodney McAree's side took control of the contest at the Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium. Defender Leo Alves opened the scoring, putting the Swifts ahead. After the interval, the team doubled their advantage through a goal from attacker Junior. Goalkeeper Decky Dunne and the back line were rarely troubled. Player Dixie Robinson noted the comfort of the win. "We defended well, they didn't create a big pile, and I thought we ran out comfortable enough winners," he said.
The clean sheet against Limavady was the fourth in a row for Dungannon Swifts in the league. This marks a stark contrast to the previous campaign, where they conceded 77 goals, a total only better than Crusaders' 81. After five matches this term, they have let in just three goals. That's the fewest of any team that has played five games, with only Coleraine (two conceded) having a better record. Robinson highlighted the achievement. "Somebody said it's the first time the Swifts have kept four consecutive clean sheets in the Premiership so that's a wonderful stat and it's credit to the boys," he told the club's media channel.
The three points lifted Dungannon Swifts to the top of the standings, although their stay there lasted only a matter of hours as other results came in. It continues a positive trend for the club, which finished inside the top-half last season for the second year running. Their current form of four straight wins comes after an opening day defeat. Limavady United, in contrast, remain one of only two teams without a point alongside Portadown, having lost their first four matches.
Last season's sixth-place finish, with 46 points from 33 games, showed the club's progress. The current defensive solidity is a key driver in building on that. Looking ahead, the Swifts' next challenge is an away trip to face Carrick Rangers on December 12th. Carrick currently sit seventh in the table, making it a closely-fought encounter. The team will be aiming to maintain their momentum and defensive discipline as they prepare for that match at Taylors Avenue.
