Dungannon Swifts extended their winning run to four matches and climbed to the top of the Irish Premiership with a 2-0 victory at Limavady United. Goals from Leo Alves and Junior secured the three points at the Showgrounds. The result leaves the Swifts in a strong position early in the season, currently sitting second in the table with 12 points from five games.
The visitors started brightly and created the first chance within sixty seconds. Ronan Wilson saw a goal-bound effort blocked. Shea Gordon then lashed a volley over the bar soon after. Limavady United goalkeeper Marty Gallagher was called into action on six minutes, denying Sean McAllister. He made another good stop from a low Leo Alves drive on 17 minutes. The home side had a major opportunity in the 22nd minute when John Butcher cut through the Swifts defence and set up debutant Jamie McGonigle. Swifts keeper Declan Dunne was equal to it, denying McGonigle a dream start after his deadline-day loan move from Coleraine. The breakthrough finally came on the half-hour mark. Leo Alves curled a superb free-kick home from the edge of the penalty area. "The lively Alves curled home from the edge of the penalty area on the half hour," he said afterwards.
Dungannon continued to press after the break. Cahal McGinty forced Gallagher into a fine save on 38 minutes, tipping a dipping 25-yard effort over the bar. Limavady came close to an equaliser seven minutes into the second half. Kieran Farren's header from Danny Lafferty's free-kick clipped the top of the crossbar. The Swifts doubled their lead and effectively killed the game in the 68th minute. Junior powered home a close-range header to make it 2-0. "A close range header from Junior after the break were enough to take the Swifts top," the scorer noted. Dungannon could have added more late on. Both Andrew Mitchell and Corey Smith had chances before the final whistle. The win took Dungannon Swifts to the summit of the league, at least until Coleraine played Crusaders later that Saturday evening.
This impressive run of form has firmly established Dungannon Swifts as early-season contenders. Their record now stands at four wins and one loss from five fixtures, placing them second. They have scored eight goals while conceding only three, giving them a healthy +5 goal difference. The title race is tight, with the Swifts just one point behind current leaders Coleraine FC. Their next challenge is an away trip to face Carrick Rangers, who are fifth, on December 12th. Fans can view the full fixtures list for the remainder of the season.
For newly-promoted Limavady United, the search for a first point of the season continues. They showed fight, particularly in the first half, but could not find a way past a resolute Dungannon defence. Jamie McGonigle's debut was a bright spot, and he was unlucky not to score early on. Philip Lowry also forced a parried save from Declan Dunne just before the hour mark after being played in by Alfie Gaston. Despite the defeat, there were positive signs for the home side, who will be looking to build on this performance. Dungannon Swifts now turn their attention to maintaining this momentum, with their squad depth and current form detailed on the club's squad page. Their next league match is against Carrick Rangers on 12 December 2026.
