Dungannon Swifts secured their place in the BetMcLean Cup second round with a 2-1 victory away to Bangor on Tuesday night. Goals from Jamie Glackin and Kealan Dillon inside the opening 16 minutes set up a win that manager Rodney McAree said his side were determined to achieve.
"Delighted, it's a cup competition and it's about progressing," McAree told reporters after the all-Premiership tie at Clandeboye Park. "It's about getting into the next round and it’s about being in the hat."
Glackin opened the scoring after nine minutes, finishing from a tight angle after being played in by a clever pass from Kealan Dillon. Dillon doubled the advantage seven minutes later, driving a low shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. Bangor's Ben Cushnie pulled a goal back on 20 minutes, capitalising on a defensive lapse to fire home, but Dungannon held firm to book their spot in the next round. The win provides a timely boost ahead of a return to Premiership action this Saturday when they host Cliftonville at Stangmore Park.
Building on momentum
McAree praised his team's first-half display, noting they created numerous chances and moved the ball well. "We look composed. We got the basics right," he said. The manager admitted the second half became a scrappier affair as Bangor pushed to stay in the competition, but was pleased with his side's defensive resilience to see the game out. McAree added.
The cup success follows a mixed run of league form that sees Dungannon Swifts sitting eighth in the Premiership table with 14 points from 11 games. Their recent results include a goalless draw at Bangor last weekend and a 2-4 home defeat to Carrick Rangers earlier this month.
Saturday's visitors, Cliftonville, are one place below them in ninth, having played a game less. The last meeting between the sides ended in a 2-0 away win for Dungannon at Solitude in late August, a result the Swifts will be eager to repeat. Both teams will view this fixture as a key opportunity to climb the table.
With the cup hurdle cleared, focus now shifts entirely to league business. Dungannon Swifts host Cliftonville at Stangmore Park on Saturday 24 October, kick-off at 3pm.
The draw for the BetMcLean Cup second round will be held on Friday at 16:30 BST, the league confirmed. Dungannon Swifts will discover their next opponents as holders Linfield and other top sides enter the competition. The club, sitting eighth with 14 points from 11 games, progressed with Tuesday's 2-1 win at Bangor. They now host Cliftonville this Saturday.
